wsj+1wiredofficechai+1Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist and one of its longest-serving employees, is departing the company after 27 years to launch Discovery Loop, a startup aimed at automating the scientific method using artificial intelligence. He is joined by three other prominent Google AI researchers — Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le — in what represents one of the most consequential talent losses in Google's history.wsj+1
Discovery Loop, structured as a public-benefit corporation, plans to use frontier AI models and large-scale compute to run thousands of automated experiment iterations in parallel, targeting breakthroughs in drug discovery, chip design, materials science, and clean energy. The company will initially serve as its own first client, using automated experimental loops to improve its own machine learning algorithms before expanding into other domains.wired+1
"We believe there is a chance for A.I. to more thoroughly automate what has traditionally involved significant human effort in experimental processes," Dean said in an interview at his Silicon Valley home, according to The New York Times. "This would yield both a greater volume and enhanced quality of experiments, ultimately leading to scientific innovations."nytimes
Dean, 58, was Google's Alphabet Inc. 30th hire in 1999. Together with Ghemawat, he built foundational systems including MapReduce, BigTable, and Spanner that defined how the tech industry handles massive-scale computing. In 2011, Dean spearheaded the creation of Google Brain, the AI research lab whose alumni include both Le and Vinyals. Wired compared the departure of Dean and Ghemawat — the only Google employees to hold the company's highest technical title of "senior fellow" — to "Mick Jagger and Keith Richards leaving the Rolling Stones to form a new band."officechai+2
The departure comes amid a broader exodus of top AI talent from Google DeepMind, which has also recently lost Transformer co-author Noam Shazeer to OpenAI and AlphaFold creator John Jumper to Anthropic.officechai
Despite the loss, Google appears to be parting on good terms. Alphabet has taken a stake in Discovery Loop as a founding investor and agreed to supply computing resources for at least a year. CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the departures, stating that "Jeff and Sanjay have been pivotal in driving some of the most significant technological shifts" at Google. The startup has also secured funding from Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, though the total amount raised has not been disclosed.nytimes+1
