esma.europa+1tradeinformeresma.europa+1The European Securities and Markets Authority on Monday formally authorised EuroCTP B.V. to operate as the European Union's first Consolidated Tape Provider for shares and exchange-traded funds, a milestone in the bloc's long-running effort to unify fragmented equity market data and give retail investors free access to consolidated trading information.esma.europa+1
The authorisation caps a multi-year regulatory push under the Capital Markets Union initiative and MiFIR framework to create a single, continuous electronic stream of pre-trade and post-trade data from trading venues across the EU.
Under the terms of the authorisation, retail investors, academics, civil society organisations, and regulators will be able to access the consolidated tape free of charge. Professional users will pay a fee — EuroCTP has proposed charging €100 per natural user each month for display access, with a non-display enterprise licence costing €4,000 per client group monthly, though the fee structure remains subject to regulatory approval.securitiesfinancetimes+2
"This authorisation marks a key step in the implementation of the consolidated tape framework, strengthening the transparency and efficiency of EU equity capital markets," said Natasha Cazenave, Executive Director at ESMA.tradeinformer
ESMA has granted EuroCTP a transition period until 30 September 2026 to finalise the operational and technical arrangements required for the start of service. Once operations begin, EuroCTP will run the tape for five years under ESMA's direct supervision.esma.europa+1
The tape will consolidate data from more than 150 European trading venues and trade reporting systems into a single feed, giving market participants a comprehensive view of trading activity across EU equity markets. EuroCTP Euronext N.V., a joint venture backed by 16 European exchanges including Deutsche Börse and Euronext, built its infrastructure at Equinix data centres in Amsterdam.wikipedia+1
ESMA selected EuroCTP as its preferred provider in December 2025 after the company submitted its bid during a tender process launched in June of that year. Trading venues and approved publication arrangements began connecting to EuroCTP's test environment by May 2026, while data vendors prepared to distribute the tape from launch.esma.europa+3
The EU has lacked a consolidated tape for equities for decades, unlike the United States, where such infrastructure has long been standard. The authorisation, dated 10 July according to Trade Informer, represents what market participants have described as a structural shift toward greater transparency in European capital markets.tradeinformer
