solarquarter+1reutersenergy-storage+1BYD Energy Storage has secured a contract from Masdar to supply 11.275 GWh of battery energy storage systems for the United Arab Emirates' round-the-clock renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi, one of the largest single energy storage deals ever signed.solarquarter+2
Under the agreement, announced this week, BYD will provide its Haohan battery energy storage system for a single station with a capacity of 1,644 MW/11,275 MWh. The systems will store electricity generated from solar panels during the day and dispatch it continuously through day and night to ensure grid reliability.saudigulfprojects+1
The contract is part of Masdar's broader RTC project, co-developed with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), which combines 5.2 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity with 19 GWh of total battery storage to deliver 1 GW of continuous clean energy — enough to power between 500,000 and one million homes year-round, according to Reuters. Construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with commercial operation targeted for 2027.chinaevhome+1
BYD is not the sole battery supplier for the project. In May, Sungrow signed an agreement with Masdar to provide 7.5 GWh of its PowerTitan 3.0 storage system and 2.6 GW of solar inverters for the same initiative. Together, the BYD and Sungrow contracts account for roughly 18.8 GWh of the project's 19 GWh storage requirement.energy-storage+1
The deal marks another milestone for BYD's push beyond electric vehicles into utility-scale energy storage. It follows a 12.5 GWh supply agreement BYD secured in Saudi Arabia last year, according to Renewables Now. Earlier this month, BYD also signed an agreement with Greenvolt Power to develop Poland's largest battery storage project, a 600 MW/2.4 GWh facility in Siedlce.cnevpost+1
BYD Energy Storage's Haohan system features what the company calls the world's largest 2,710 Ah Blade Battery cell dedicated to energy storage. The Abu Dhabi contract alone represents battery capacity equivalent to roughly 187,000 electric vehicles, underscoring how BYD's vertical integration — from battery cells to finished EVs and grid systems — is reshaping the global energy storage landscape.cnevpost
