Announced from Singapore, Mastercard Wallet Pay is designed to let wallet providers plug into the company's global acceptance network for cross-border payments, money transfers, and card issuance without building the underlying payment rails themselves.asiabusinessoutlook+1
The launch brings together a broad coalition of digital payment providers. Alipay+, the cross-border gateway operated by Ant International that connects more than 50 e-wallets and banking apps, is among the anchor partners. Its affiliated wallets — AlipayHK, Clip, GCash, KakaoPay, TNG eWallet, and TrueMoney — will connect to Wallet Pay, alongside Axian, CRED, DaviPlata, Mercado Pago, MTN, and TenPay Global.investing+1
"Wallets are gateways to the digital economy and launchpads for broader financial services," said Jorn Lambert, chief product officer at Mastercard. "Through our Wallet Pay solutions, we're helping payment providers to enhance the interoperability and user experience of their services, underpinned by trust, scale and convenience for the people and businesses they serve."businesswire
The portfolio bundles several capabilities: interoperability across borders and payment types, support for providers to launch their own credit, debit, or prepaid card programs, unified merchant acceptance in-store and online for more than 3.7 billion Mastercard credentials, and money movement across more than 200 countries and territories in 150 currencies.fintechnews+1
DaviPlata, a Colombian digital wallet, highlighted early results, reporting 1.5 million active cards within 15 months of implementing a digital debit card model with Mastercard that eliminated acquisition costs.businesswire+1
The initiative builds on Mastercard's recently announced Global Financial Health Coalition, which convenes wallet providers to address gaps between access and financial well-being. With global digital wallet usage projected to surpass 6 billion by 2030, the company is betting that providing shared infrastructure will accelerate adoption in underbanked markets across Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.asiabusinessoutlook+1
"Together with Mastercard and partners, Ant International looks forward to expanding global interoperability and mobile agentic commerce for people and businesses everywhere to connect and thrive," said Peng Yang, CEO of Ant International.businesswire
