cnevpost+1cnevpost+1scmp+1Tesla sold 50,047 vehicles at retail in China in August, down 12.4% from a year earlier and marking a third consecutive month of year-on-year decline in the world's largest electric vehicle market, according to data released Tuesday by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). It was the company's weakest August for domestic sales since 2022.cnevpost+1
The results came a day after Tesla announced its first direct cash discounts on locally built vehicles in roughly 20 months, offering 10,000 yuan ($1,475) off inventory Model Y vehicles and 5,000 yuan off Model 3s for deliveries completed by September 30.scmp+1
While retail sales sank, the Shanghai factory's export business continued to grow. The plant shipped 36,119 vehicles overseas in August, up 38.7% year-on-year, bringing cumulative exports for the first eight months to 331,443 — a 114.7% increase that now exceeds domestic retail sales of 316,251 for the same period. Exports accounted for 51.2% of the factory's wholesale volume this year, up from 29.9% a year earlier.eletric-vehicles+1
Combined wholesale sales, which include both domestic deliveries and exports, totaled 86,166 vehicles in August, up 3.6% year-on-year, according to earlier CPCA data. The divergence underscores Tesla's growing reliance on shipments to Europe, Canada, South Korea and other Asia-Pacific markets to offset its domestic struggles.driveteslacanada+1
Tesla's domestic sales for the first two months of the third quarter total 77,296 vehicles. Holding the quarter flat against last year's 169,294 would require roughly 92,000 deliveries in September — more than Tesla has ever sold in a single month in China. The current record stands at 93,843 units, set in December 2025.eletric-vehicles
Tesla's share of China's battery electric vehicle retail market slipped to 7.17% in August from 8.33% a year earlier, even as the broader BEV market grew about 1% to 698,000 units. According to Investor's Business Daily, Tesla's cumulative retail sales through August stand at 316,251, down 12.4% on the year.investors+1
The cash incentives announced on September 7 can be stacked with existing paint credits, insurance subsidies and interest-free financing of up to five years, bringing the effective starting price of the Model 3 to 222,500 yuan and the Model Y to 253,500 yuan. According to the South China Morning Post, the entry-level Model Y discount amounts to a 3.8% price reduction.driveteslacanada+2
Tesla also unveiled a revamped Model 3 for Chinese pre-sale on September 1, and a longer-range Model Y variant appeared in a ministry filing in mid-August. Meanwhile, the company faces its largest-ever recall campaigns in China beginning September 25, covering software fixes for nearly 3 million vehicles.eletric-vehicles
