finance.biggo+1finance.biggo+1facebookChina has surpassed the United States to become the world leader in financial technology patent filings over the past decade, according to an analysis by Nikkei published on Monday. The shift marks another milestone in China's broader push to dominate global intellectual property in emerging technologies.roic+1
Chinese banks and technology companies led the world in fintech patent applications, with filings spanning digital payments, lending platforms, asset management, and cryptocurrency-related technologies. Major state-owned banks have ramped up patent filings for AI-driven risk management and mobile payment systems, while tech giants and fintech startups have focused on blockchain, digital wallets, and embedded finance.roic+1
The development builds on a longer trend. China led the world in international patent applications in 2025, with 73,718 filings through the Patent Cooperation Treaty, ahead of the United States at 52,617. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, China's patent office accounted for 49.1 percent of all global patent filings in 2024, compared with 16.2 percent for the US.facebook+1
The fintech patent leadership could translate into commercial advantages as Chinese firms leverage proprietary technologies in both domestic and international markets. Patents covering payment infrastructure and risk analytics may become key assets in cross-border licensing and partnerships.roic
However, analysts caution that patent volume alone does not guarantee market dominance. China still faces challenges exporting its fintech models to heavily regulated markets in the US and Europe. The country's fintech ecosystem has nonetheless scaled rapidly, driven by domestic demand from its vast consumer base and supportive government policies that have evolved from experimental sandboxes to more structured regulatory frameworks.csis+1
The fintech milestone adds to China's growing patent dominance across multiple technology sectors. A separate Nikkei analysis earlier this year found China ranked first in physical AI patent competitiveness, leading in nine out of ten categories analyzed.fnnews+1
