9to5google+1play.google+1edtechinnovationhub+1Google Alphabet Inc. has quietly released a "Magic Pointer" app to the Google Play Store, offering the first tangible software preview of its upcoming Googlebook laptops ahead of their fall launch. The app, spotted on the Play Store on Thursday, is described as enabling users to "point and select to get help from Gemini," providing "contextual AI suggestions" and seamless Gemini assistance on screen.play.google+1
The release was first reported by 9to5Google, which noted the app appeared as the tech world awaits more details about Googlebook hardware expected later this fall. Magic Pointer is the flagship feature of Google's Googlebook platform, which the company announced at The Android Show in May as a new category of AI-first laptops combining the best of Android and ChromeOS.blog+3
When Googlebook was unveiled, Google DeepMind described Magic Pointer as a cursor that uses Gemini to understand the visual and semantic context of whatever users point at on screen. A wiggle of the cursor activates Gemini, which can then offer contextual actions — from summarizing a PDF to creating a calendar event from a concert poster to merging spreadsheet columns with a simple voice command.deepmind+3
The Play Store listing hints at capabilities beyond the cursor itself. According to a Facebook post from 9to5Google, the app also helps users "move files, photos, and apps easily between your phone and laptop," while a companion "Cast My Apps" feature lets users open phone apps directly on the Googlebook.facebook
This aligns with Google's broader vision for the platform, which integrates Android apps, ChromeOS browsing, and a "Quick Access" feature for seamlessly accessing phone files from the laptop. The first Googlebook devices are being developed with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.edtechinnovationhub+1
The app's appearance on the Play Store suggests Google is laying the software groundwork ahead of hardware availability. Google has also announced an August 12 event for the Pixel 11 and Pixel Watch 5, though Googlebook details are expected separately this fall. The release comes as Google continues folding its AI features under the Gemini brand — with a recent report indicating the company plans to rebrand its existing Pixel "Magic Cue" feature under the Gemini umbrella as well.googlebook+1
